Day in the Life

A typical day in the life of for me begins by visualizing my day, a day before. Somehow as I evolved through different stages of life, I’ve always diverted all of my attention to hurdles and roadblocks and whatever challenges come across life. Perhaps that has helped me in my professional life as a Project Manager. I’m laser focused on problems and challenges in my day and how to solve them.

So, back to my day – visualizing is key to me. Factors I always account for is:

  1. My work start and end times.
  2. My partner’s work – start and end times.
  3. My partner’s study / college times – she is back to school doing her BSN.
  4. My kid’s school and other events (my oldest is in kindergarten, and goes to school just half days per the school district- 3 hours).
  5. After school activities – such as karate, soccer practice, dance.
  6. Grocery shopping – I am a checklist guy, and get what is on the checklist. Maximum efficiency and to the point with shopping. I have a pr of getting in n out of smart n final in less than a minute, 48 seconds to be specific. Had to get an amazon gift card. Could’ve been less than 48 seconds had they not changed only amazon’s gift card spot.
  7. Writing.

And once I’ve listed down the activities and events for the day, I then play this game of Tetris and stack all of the above in my calendar. Basically time blocking each event and assigning it in my calendar. Before I applied time blocking to my personal life, I was running my personal life on the fly. Don’t get me wrong, my professional calendar was immaculate. I neither missed meetings nor double booked my calls / meetings. Meetings, calls, working sessions were encompassed in this 8-5 window where work was accomplished with the highest efficiency. And when things were getting out of control, I was lost. And I needed help asap. And through trial and errors, I started writing my day and tagged each activity / task to time. This helped me dedicate time to a task without sacrificing or compromising or even apologizing to anyone for being late.

Key things to consider when time blocking and organising your day:

  • Take out time the previous day – 15 mins.
  • List out all your tasks for the next day – prioritize it.
  • Assign a duration for each task.
  • If you have a job with specific work windows, then put that first on your calendar. Don’t forget to include lunch breaks. If your job allows you, then add a coffee or recharge break.
  • Put your sleep and wake up times
  • Now put in eveything else, along with the duration.

This is a trial and error and custom to yourself. I’m still learning and not perfect at the ideal work schedule. What I do know is that I have evolved and gotten better. Improving my schedule and refining it daily by 1% has helped me stay organized for myself and my family. Hope this helps.

So, here is my typical day in the life for Monday, March 17, 2025.
